Oil Firms Sign $2 Billion Saudi Gas Deal

Royal Dutch/Shell and Total have signed a $2 billion deal to develop Saudi Arabia's huge gas reserves.

The oil giants are the first western firms to win such rights since Saudi's energy sector was nationalized in 1975, BBC News reports.

The European firms will find and pump gas in 80,000 square miles of the vast southeastern Empty Quarter desert. Read more.

Saudi Oil Minister Ali Naimi said the deal was the "first in a series" to promote industrialization and economic development in the kingdom.
