Scientists have created eerie zombie dogs, reanimating the canines after several hours of clinical death in attempts to develop suspended animation for humans.
US scientists have succeeded in reviving the dogs after three hours of clinical death, paving the way for trials on humans within years.

Pittsburgh's Safar Centre for Resuscitation Research has developed a technique in which subject's veins are drained of blood and filled with an ice-cold salt solution.

The animals are considered scientifically dead, as they stop breathing and have no heartbeat or brain activity.

But three hours later, their blood is replaced and the zombie dogs are brought back to life with an electric shock.

Plans to test the technique on humans should be realised within a year, according to the Safar Centre.

Could this spark a debate on the afterlife? What if people come back saying they want to be dead again?

I'd bet those scientists won't be making it to heaven either, but the dogs will be.

First of all WTF?!? Second, some people enjoy playing God, but natures a bitch and needs balance. When we die, were meant to die! and when were born Stupid, I guess some of us stay Stupid! Poor dog.

This may be true but what are we going to do? You are just going to be frozen until they find a cure for cancer or what if someone needs a liver?? They cant live with out the transplant! so what are we going to do pick and choose on who is going to live and die and be frozen????

Don't get all up in arms about this like its the end of all ethics or anything. First of all they're just testing. Anyway it won't be anything new really. I mean humans have been attempting to prolong life since we've existed... so why would we stop after we're 'dead' if it was within our power to do something about it. IF this research is stopped by some government act or whatnot, its just time standing in between it actually happening. ANYWAY, i think its exciting. We could possibly answer that age old question: What happens after death?

p.s. Don't feel too bad for the dog they tested on, high chances are that it was about to be put down in a pound. Fact is that no one knows what happens after death, for all we kno that dog might just feel like it was knocked out for a while...

Some of the comments here are appalling.

To become anxious or refute this kind of research shows extreme ignorance rooted in fear. It reminds me of how the notion of cadaver research was once greatly feared. I mean, it deals with dead people afterall. Gods territory you know. Scientists were unable to perform such basic research, so they ended up stealing corpses to study them. Personally, i'm thankfull they ignored such foolish criticism, or else we'd all be up shit creek by now.

Some people are simply not comfortable having their personal beliefs challenged. This is simply a new piece of biological evidence that further places judeo-christian beliefs into question. And you guys are scared.

If this so called 'God' truly did not want mankind to dabble in necromantic sciences, or any of the other sciences that religious fanatics (A.K.A George Bush) see as unjust, wrong and an abomination against nature, then why doesn't he just step in with his all mighty power, and smite these wrong doers? I mean, it's all right for you for people to have their own beliefs and whatnot, but when you start impeding in the way of science and progress, and things that could improve the way of life for billions, that's when it gets pretty idiotic.

What a strangely written article. "Scientists have created eerie zombie dogs..."

The dogs aren't zombies. They are just fine. The "death" is only clinical. The clinical definition of death is no heart beat. Basically, they slow down a body to a point of near stop.

The American troops in Iraq and elsewhere could really use this technology. It's like a pause button for the body. A doctor could 'pause' the wounded soldier and patch him up, then hit "play" again. Otherwise tho soldier would *really* die before they could be helped.

This talk of "zombies" is just strange.

Re: Scientists Kill Dog, Resurrect Hours Later

The problem with this whole thing about God, is that people seem to think that we work outside of what God wants, that somehow we are not part of the plan. I think God wants us to improve our society and that maybe this is one of the ways he is allowing us to do so.

Think about it this way, if someone you loved had just been in a terrible car accident and the only way to save him or her was by doing this technique until a vital organ could be found and delivered, would you look at the doctors and tell them that you don't think it is right to save the life because God might get mad?

I think that this is wonderful technology that is divinely inspired, and will save many people the heartbreaking trauma of loved ones dieing early.

But sometimes "Dead is Better"

Yeah Boy!! What the hell?! First robots, and now this? Y'know, a few days ago, I was thinking.. I should really worry more about robots taking over the world, and less about a zompocolypse (after talking about it for so long, the word zombie apocolypse gets to be too long - so I shortened it to zompocolypse).
So, I guess I have to keep that sharpened shovel outside of the door again. I think it's interesting they mention "behavourial problems" with reanimated subjects.. weird.
