Giant Drawings Predate Nazca Lines

Archeologists have discovered a group of figures scraped into the hills of Peru's southern coastal desert that are believed to predate the country's famous Nazca lines.

About 50 giant figures were etched into the earth over an area of roughly 90 square miles (145 square kilometers) near the city of Palpa, El Comercio newspaper reported.

The drawings -- which include human figures as well as animals such as birds, monkeys, and felines -- are believed to have been created by members of the Paracas Culture sometime between 600 and 100 B.C., Johny Islas, the director of the Andean Institute of Archaeological Studies, told the newspaper.

One prominent figure appears to represent the main deity of the Paracas Culture that is commonly depicted on textiles and ceramics that date from the period, Islas said.

The recently discovered designs predate the country's famous Nazca lines that cover a 35-mile (56-kilometer) stretch of desert and have mystified scientists. They were added to the United Nations' Cultural Heritage list in 1994. The Nazca culture flourished between 50 B.C. and 600 A.D., Islas said.

The lines -- which also include pictographs of various animals -- are one of Peru's top tourist attractions. About 80,000 tourists fly over the site every year.

Intellpuke: "Cool giant lines and giant figures the ancient Paracas people made - and there are even some lines that look like landing strips. Nifty story by the Associated Press.

Re: Giant Drawings Predate Nazca Lines

These giant earth drawings aka geoglyphs are almost certainly an ancient Peruvian religious response to total solar eclipses. I have already shown in considerable detail how this applies the Nazca Lines, especially the biomorph geoglyphs of birds, animals, and humans or anthropomorphic deities on my Nazca Lines and the "Eye in the Sky" web site. The totally eclipsed sun distinctly resembles the pupil and iris of a gigantic "Eye of God" staring down from the sky and their was a high concentration of total solar eclipses over Peru during the time that the Nazca Lines were created. During my research I did find that there were concentrations of total solar eclipses over Peru that predated the Nazca culture and I fully expected that they had influenced the culture of ancient Peru and had set the stage for the Nazca Lines but I limited my essay to the Nazca Lines.

Similar geoglyphs in the Atacama desert of Chile are also most probably responses to total solar eclipses. The most famous of these Atacama geoglyphs, a huge anthropomorphized feline figure with a rayed head that resembles winged sun disk symbols, known as the Atacama Giant is almost certainly a represention of the pre-Columbian eclipse god which was, and still is. . . thought of as a cosmic puma eating the sun.

Many of the bird geoglyphs are probably inspired by a bird-like form that is seen within the sun's corona during some total solar eclipses. Most if not all of the Nazca Lines bird geoglyphs are aligned with the winter solstice sunrise which is a less spectacular but more regular and predictable "deatn and rebirth" of the sun(god). My research indicates that ancient cultures transfered total solar eclipse inspired religious beliefs and practices onto the winter solstice and possibly also the summer solstice since they occur on an annual basis whereas solar eclipses are usually rather less frequent cosmic events. One of the Nazca Bird geoglyphs is more properly interpreted as a total solar eclipse inspired Serpent-Bird and another one which has no discernable heaf but has a human face depicted in its body is more properly interpreted as an anthropomorphized "Bird-Man" representation of the Nazca's sungod that was inspired by the total solar eclipse "Sun Bird". Some of the Atacama geoglyphs appear to be winged sun symbols inspired by the total solar eclipse "Sun Bird". I would not be at all surprised to learn that the Paracas deity mentioned in this article is a version of the sun-eating eclipse puma/feline god or winged sun inspired "Bird-Man" deity. . . Please see http://nazcalines.homestead.com for an in depth essay about this. Robin Edgar, Montreal, Quebec, Canada
