California Fire Triples In Size, 10,000 Homes Threatened

The Station fire in Angeles National Forest tripled in size Saturday, spreading rapidly to the east and west and threatening at least 10,000 homes in a broad swath of foothill neighborhoods in areas including La Canada Flintridge, La Crescenta, Glendale, Altadena and Big Tujunga Canyon as temperatures reached triple digits and flames drew closer to homes.

Three to five homes in rural Big Tujunga Canyon were lost, said authorities.

Three civilians were airlifted out for medical attention after being burned in the Big Tujunga Canyon area, said Bruce Quintelier, fire information officer for Angeles National Forest. Officials believe the three civilians were trying to defend their homes, said Steve Whitmore, spokesman for the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department. Four firefighters suffered minor injuries Saturday while battling the blaze.

As of Saturday evening, the fire had spread across 20,102 acres and was threatening 10,000 homes. Estimated damage had already topped $1.3 million. With 1,804 fire personnel beating back the blaze, officials said they did not expect to contain it until Sept. 8.

Quintelier said the fire north of Los Angeles was moving in all directions: "It's moved over to Altadena, southeast of where it started; it's moved north, east and southwest. It's been basically moving all over the place," said Quintelier. "There have been spot fires that have flared up during the day and caused a lot of ash and smoke to be spewed up in the air."

Just after 7 p.m., the evacuation areas were expanded to include neighborhoods north of Loma Alta Drive in Altadena.
